Rye Cook-BiggertI was born and raised on an island just west of Seattle; called Bainbridge Island. Growing up I was taught the way of the world on an organic farm my parents owned. Through my life I have experienced hardships whether at first hand or from a birds eye view. When I was nineteen I moved to the city and learned what poverty really was. The city I grew up in is privileged compared to many other places in our country but being an original islander I was raised to work hard and earn what you deserve.
While in Seattle I attended community college dropped out, and went to massage school; while working full time between one to two restaurants and going to school full time at night- ART was extremely important in my day to day lifestyle. Work is play and play is all positive; have fun everyday and your life will be a joyous one to remember. Through the years in Seattle something just wasn't right so after I graduated form massage school I took off to Colorado. I always loved art but the art of life was never portrayed that broadly and enthusiastically until I made the majestic mountains my home. While in Colorado the people who became my family all from different backgrounds shared their life stories each one unique in their own way. In December of 2010 I took a trip to Detroit; a city rich with a history of ups and downs. I went with a local who gave me the tour of the city and all its hidden gems. While in Detroit I met some amazing people; artists from all walks of life. B-boys and B-girls, music artists and graffiti artists all knowing each other through threads of respect and compassion in this city. I feel as if art is truly the only form of freedom we as humans have to hold onto. Art is everywhere; the way you dance, sing, paint, dress, even walk its all a representation of an idea or feeling that is your own. Some people see art as a stagnant or still form, but I see it in constant motion. The earth is the worlds best artist; with all of the creatures having different markings some extremely intricate others mild in show- but each one has a purpose. The way the leaves change in the fall, how snow falls and blankets the earth with a vibrant yet soft glow; and of course the sunrise and sun sets. |
